The Self-Defense Lie

Luke 22:35-36 “And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye anything? And they said nothing. Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one”

This is #1 verse that people who want to kill people in self-defense use to defend their stance in the NT... So let us follow THAT sword shall we? In Luke as we read Jesus tells the disciples to "buy a sword" but did he ever say anywhere to use it for violent means? NO HE DID NOT!! If you say he did then you are ADDING your bias to the Word of God. In Matthew 26:51-52 it shows the response of JESUS himself when the sword was used for violence by one his disciples so what did he do?  Jesus rebuked him and told HIM to put it AWAY!! "And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear. Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword" (Matthew 26:51-52). This clearly shows that the sword they were told to buy in Luke was NOT supposed to be used for violence. Need more?

Let’s now look at Matthew 5:38-46 where it says “Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth, but I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also” and Jesus goes on to lay it all out “If any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also and whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asks thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Ye have heard that it hath been said thou shall love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may BE the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans the same?” If you kill someone in self-defense you are doing what the world does, not what a Disciple of Jesus would do. People hate this passage because this is the REAL New Testament way of living. Anyone who says that they can kill in self defense has bought into the apostate “americanized version of christianity”, but there is more.

The disciples were with Jesus DAILY when he was alive, and I always tell the followers of the apostate teachers on the phony christian TV stations this, why didn’t the apostles the garbage that the false teachers are teaching? That same question I pose to you, why didn’t the disciples or Paul teach this “self-defense” false doctrine that you are clinging to? Because Jesus DIDN’T TEACH IT TO THEM! Show one verse in Acts, just one in the ENTIRE New Testament where we are told its OKAY to kill in self-defense… I will save you some time, it’s NOT in there. I do not care what rights your country gives you because the LAW of the NT which is LOVE THY ENEMIES supersedes it! PERIOD! Need more?

In Matthew 10:16 JESUS said “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves” and in Romans we are told that “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shall heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:19-21). Once again I am still looking for that self-defense passage in the NT. Please don’t tell me that all you have are a few Old Covenant verses and the one “Go buy a sword” verse? But there is more…

There is not one record in Church History of the Disciples of Christ after Jesus ascended committing violence, not ONE. That all changed in 313 AD when Constantine decriminalized Christian worship, BUT the church he legitimized was the Roman Catholic Church which made violence okay in the Church (study the crusades) but not so the true followers of Christ. How many have died thanks to the RCC? However, until 313AD the TRUE Disciples of Jesus were hung by ropes, feed to the lions and crucified and they were killed by the tens of thousands yet they never lifted a finger in self-defense. They could have, they had a LARGE Army that could go “buy a sword” didn’t they? They were getting saved by the thousands, so WHY DIDN’T THEY GO AND BUY SWORDS? Because their leaders (the disciples) KNEW that Jesus did NOT mean to buy a sword for VIOLENCE and that Jesus never taught violence! They died by the thousands, but the Word of God says that they turned the world upside down, but how? The LOVE OF GOD they showed while they were being tortured and killed showed that did not have religion, but that they had a personal and living relationship with Jesus Christ and only someone who has that has NO fear of death or of anything else! PERIOD!

In closing I will say that I used to think like you… I was an US Army Cavalry Scout and I was gung ho America first and defend the land, but then the Holy Spirit showed me the TRUTH of the Word not the “americanized version” of the Bible which allows people to kill in self-defense. It took the Holy Spirit to open up the Word of God to me to show me that killing for ANY reason is NOT what God’s NT children do because we are called to a higher calling which is to live for Christ and maybe someday to die for him. If anyone is afraid to die then they don’t need a gun, they need to fall at the Master’s feet and make him Lord because then and only then will all their fear of death will be removed.

God protects my house, and God does not need the help of “Smith and Wesson” or “Glock” to do so for HE IS THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY!
